8th Week Update

Wow, hard to believe we are down to the last two weeks of school!  Please, please, please check grades.  If the grade for the FACS class is not passing, it is not to late to turn things in.  I do not deduct points for late work.  In most cases, the student still has missing vocabulary work to turn in.  The vocab ulary information is also on the BLOG.

6th graders are cooking muffins and haystacks this week.

7th graders are making baked cheese sandwiches and cookies this week.

8th graders will have a big breakfast that they prepare of waffles, yogurt parfaits and Canadian bacon.

7th Week Update

7th graders did a fantastic job with the Cinco de Mayo party.  Some of the highlights were colorful sombreros, Cinco de Mayo banners, pinata, straw hats, festive music, and of course, lots of queso dips.  It was an opportunity for them to practice social etiquette skills.  Thank you, parents and students, for helping to make this a huge success.  This week the 7th graders will begin to study family service careers and leadership.

6th graders will now work on a room budget and employability skills.  I hate to take them away from the sewing, because they were all so determined and focused on doing a good job.  But, it is time to move on.  They will have more opportunities for sewing in the 7th and 8th grades.

8th graders begin cooking today.  Managing their time, teamwork, leaving the kitchen neat and clean, and putting nutritious food on the table will be some of the challenges they will encounter.

Progress Reports

Progress reports will be going out this week.  Please e-mail me if you have a concern about grades or conduct.

7th grade FACS class Cinco de Mayo party has been moved up to this Friday, 5-2-08, during class the FACS class period.  It was originally scheduled for Monday 5-5-08, but due to a conflict, we are having it earlier. 7th graders will soon be in the Parenting and Child Care Unit.

8th grade has now started the Food and Nutrition Unit.  6th grade is working hard on sewing in the Housing and Interiors Unit.

A special thanks to our Family and Consumer Sciences volunteers.

Three lovely ladies who volunteered their time and energy to help measure and sort fabric. They did a tremendous job!

  • Allison DiNapoli's mom, Maryanne DiNapoli
  • Elizabeth Tallman's mom, Mary Tallman
  • Will Morris's mom, Montyne Morris

And a special thanks to the many parents who donated prizes for our Motivational Prize Drawing Box.  The students are now asking me what they can do to earn a ticket.  It has their attention!

Grades

Vocabulary in-class work time will soon be over.  Look on the lesson calendars on a previous BLOG for the dates. Most of the students would benefit from doing some sets at home.  Some of the students have already finished and will have extra sewing time.

Also, because of CRCT testing beginning this week, we will be running a little behind in our planned FACS lesson calendar.  I will only see the students every other day for most of the testing days.   Please check with me for any missed or failed work if you have any questions.

Sewing

I hope everyone had a restful week for spring break.  The 7th and 8th graders started work on the sewing machines before spring break.  The 6th graders will begin work on the machines soon after the break.  The 7th graders will also do some handsewing.

The students learn sewing safety, equipment care, machine parts identy, location and function, threading,  paper sewing, and sewing seams.  If time allows, they will work on a small project.  They work at different speeds.  Some are way ahead of the others.  But that is ok.

They rotate every other day at the machines.  When they are not at the machines, they are doing vocabulary or remediation.

Many of my students have shared with me how they have worked on a project at home or with grandparents.  If you have a machine at home, they would probably enjoy showing you what they have learned in class.

2 Weeks for 3rd Nine Weeks

Two weeks left in 3rd nine weeks.  Please check FACS grade to see if it is where you need it to be.  Also, give yourself some flexibility.  A few points can make a big difference on a final grade.
