Unit Rate Project

The Unit rate project will be due 2/3/12.  What is the Unit rate project?  Your child has a rubric, but here is what they are required to do.

1. Go to your local Publix, Wal-Mart, Target etc and find two products that are the same but in different sizes (.5 gallon of milk and a one gallon of milk).

2. Students will then record the prices of the two different sized products.

3. Students will calculate the unit rate of each item and determine what is the better buy.

4. Students will write a summary of what the better purchase is. 

I handed out the rubrics in class on Tuesday.  I will put it up shortly on the blog so you can see exactly what is required.  I will be counting this project as a test grade.  I do not expect you or your child to purchase anything.  The point of the project is to become savvy shoppers and learn how to find the best buy.

 

 

January 31 - Feb 3.

Hey there.  Hopefully you have checked Pinnacle and saw the grades the students have gotten so far.  I am very pleased with the progress they are making.

This week the focus will be on solving setting up and solving proportions.  We will also work on solving word problems involving proportions.  Proportions are very big in the 6th grade curriculum as we will be using them to work on other concepts.  It is especially important that your child comes prepared to learn this week.

The Unit rate project will be due on 2/3.  I know the blog said it would be due on 1/27, but I backed the date up a bit.

January 17 -Jan 20

Hey there.  This week we are continuting to work on using fractions, decimals and percents interchangeably.

Tuesday - review of changing fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions

Wednesday - changing fractions to percents and percents to fractions

Thursday - station review of decimals to percents and percents to decimals, fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions, percents to fractions and fractions to percents.

Friday - quiz over decimal, fractions and percents.  Rubric for Unit rate project will be given.  Unit rate project will be due 1/27/12.  More details coming.

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had a great holiday season.  We are 1/2, .5 or 50% through the school year - which is the current unit we will be working on. 

At the end of this unit, the students will be able to use decimals. fractions and percents interchangebly, set up and use a proportion, figure out the degrees in a circle graph, and calculate tip.

The schedule for this week is as follows:

Tuesday - intro to new behavior plan, overview of unit

Wednesday - changing decimals to percents and percents to decimals

Thursday - changing fractions to to decimals and decimals to fractions

Friday - changing percents to fractions and fractions to percents.

December 5-9 2011

Hey there. I can't believe we are already in December!  The plans is as follows.

Monday - Unit 4 Vocabulary, review of order of operations, and expression and variables.  Tests were given back to the students.  We made flash cards for the vocabulary quiz and we will be reviewing in class each day.

Tuesday - introduction to adding equations.  Review of vocabulary words

Wednesday - practice adding equations.  Unit 4 Test corrections due. 

Thursday - Vocabulary quiz

Friday - introduction to subtracting equations

November 28th - December 2nd

Hello.  After a great week long break, we are are back to work and we are going to work hard!  The following is the tentative plan for this week.

Monday - review of order of operations, substitute into expressions, complete table and charts.  Check solutions by substituting into expressions.

Unit 4 Part I test on Friday

Tuesday - Continue checking solutions by substituting into expression.  Start translating phrases into expression and expressions into phrases

Wednesday - Translate expressions into phrases and phrases into expressions.  Homework - Unit 4 review sheet

Thursday - check review guide.  In class review game.  Homework - Unit 4 Review

Friday - Unit 4 Part 1 Test.
