Week of May 4th-8th, 2009

We will continue reading the play version of The Diary of Anne Frank.  Students need to keep a log of their quotations in their writing log:

By Tuesday:  10-15 quotations, each with the page number and the context in which it was said.  In other words, interpret the meaning of the selected quotation.

By Friday:  20-25 quotations with the aforementioned.

Students, please look for your textbooks, Writing and Grammar and your Literature text.  You will be turning these in next week.  They are expensive books to replace, so please find your own books!

Week of April 20th-24th, 2009

CRCT Testing will begin on Tuesday of this week and will end on Monday.

In language arts class, students will  discuss how the historical context influences a literary work.

We will read a memoir entitled "I Have Lived a Thousand Years" written by a young girl who survived a concentration camp during WWII.

Students will complete entry # five in their writing logs.  They may choose to address two out of the five questions dealing with figurative language, imagery, or theme.

This week, students studied the genre of poetry and took a poetry quiz on the 3rd.  We read and analyzed the classic poem "Oh Captain, My Captain" by Walt Whitman.

Week of March 23rd-27th, 2009

Highlights of the Week:

Punctuation Project due Monday.  Ensure that you submit a Work Cited page and your criteria sheet.

Monday/Tuesday:  Poetry Notes

                            Found Poem with music.

Wednesday/Thursday: Bring your literature textbook to class.  You will analyze several poems for form, sound, figurative language, and theme.

Friday:  Sample practice reading/poetry test.

Week of March 16th-20th, 2009

Due Dates:

Monday and Tuesday:  Create your punctuation project.  Bring all of your resources and supplies for creating your project.  You will attach a Works Cited section so keep track of your sources.

Wednesday:  Turn in your completed resume or cover letter.  Make sure that your document is typed; use  12 or 14 font/Times New Roman. If you wish to submit the resume/qualifications brief, follow the directions for putting your information into a template on WORD.

1.  On the FILE menu, click New.

2.  in the New Document task pane,  under Templates, click On my Computer.

3.  Click the Other Documents tab.

4.  Double-click the Resume Wizard.

5.  Follow the steps in the wizard.  You have many options for a template; choose the one that appeals to you.

Thursday:  Reading Benchmark Test in the media center.

Friday:  Punctuation quiz over the major components/skills within your project.

We will continue our study of business writing this week.

The Simpson Shuffle Run/Walk and Health Fair  will be held on Friday, March 27, 4:30-6:30 PM.  Registration forms for the run/walk can be found at the front office and on the Simpson web site www.cobbk12.org/~simpson.   Proceeds will support the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life which raises funds to fight cancer.  Please join us!  Together we can make a difference.

Week of March 9th-13th, 2009

Highlights for the Week:

Monday:  Benchmark Test

Tuesday:  Review of the Benchmark Results and Completion of Cover Letter.

Wednesday:  All make-up work is due to Gleason during homeroom.

                      -Punctuation Power Point

                      - Explanation of the criteria for your punctuation booklet.

Thursday-Friday:  Work on the Punctuation Booklet and read and complete an abstract on a scientific article.

***There will be a quiz on adjective and adverb phrases and clauses on Thursday.  Study your practice examples from your workbook and your textbook.  Remember that adjective clauses describe a noun and generally begin with a relative pronoun, and adverb clauses describe an adjective, adverb, or a verb and begin with subordinating conjunctions(refer to your reference packet).  Review the difference between a phrase and a clause.

March 2nd-6th, 2009

Hello,

If you wish to enter the writing contest, please turn in your entry to Mrs. Gleason by Friday of this week.  This week, we will discuss various types of business correspondence, including business letters and resumes.  Please note the following due dates:

 

Due Tuesday:  Adjective and Adverb Clauses in your grammar workbook. Complete all of page 87 and complete the first five in each section on page 90. Feel free to refer to page 9 of your reference packet.

Also, have you blank job application and set of directions and/or owner's manual to a gadget of your choice in class this week.  Note:  do not bring in the gadget. 

 

 

Due Thursday:  Your independent novel analysis chart.  Use specific support from your novel and include the page numbers.  Do not wait until the last minute to complete this chart!

Week of February 23rd-27th, 2009

Due Wednesday of this week:  Adjective and Adverb Clauses on  page 85 and  page 89 of your workbook--1-5 each section.

Due next Monday:  Blank job application and a set of directions.

This week, we will conclude our reading of Flowers for Algernon and prepare for our lit. analysis discussion on Tuesday.  Please use the effective question examples and the non-examples when creating your questions.

We will watch portions of the film Charly and address key movie critique criteria while viewing the film.

On Friday, we will have a quiz on adjective and adverb phrases and clauses.

Week of February 17th-20th, 2009

Reminders:

Due Wednesday:  Workbook pages 73-74 on adjective and adverb phrases.

Due Friday:  Grammar Pre-Test packet.  Please do not write on the packet; use your own notebook paper.  Feel free to use your resources(textbook, workbook, on-line resources while taking this test.)

Make sure that you have your writing log with all of your entries up-to-date.  You may check the class calendar and the list of writing log entries on the board.

This week, we will continue to read Flowers for Algernon and we will discuss literary allusion, irony, tone, and mood.  Please keep a current list of you lit. terms in your writing log.

If you are interested in a writing contest, please see Mrs. Gleason about the criteria that I discussed on Tuesday of this week.  Final entries are due on March 5th.

Bonus:  The first two people who see me with the following answer will receive bonus points on your recent pronoun usage quiz:

Find one subordinate clause that begins with a relative pronoun in this week's language arts blog.
