For many students, learning new vocabulary words can be challenging. It is important for students to learn a variety of strategies to help them learn new vocabulary. One great strategy is LINCS. Please see information below to learn more about this strategy.

Overview: use index cards-divide both sides by drawing lines across middle
EXAMPLE WORD: FIEF (write word on top half on one side and circle word)
Step 1: List the parts-(list word on study card, list most important parts of definition on the back of card) Write on top of the other side-land given by king for fighting in army
Step 2: Imagine a picture -(Create image in mind of what word is about, describe image)
Step 3: Note a reminding word -think of familiar word that sounds like the word, or part of word)- write on bottom half of the first side-chief
Step 4: Construct a LINCing story -(Make up story about meaning of word that includes the reminding word) -write on the bottom half of the second side-chief of his land
Step 5: Self-test (Forwards self-test-say word, say reminding word, think of LINCing story, think of image, say meaning of word, check to see if correct) (Backwards self-test-Say meaning of word, Think of image, think of LINCing story, think of reminding word, say the new word, check to see if correct)
