Here is the vocabulary list for The Giver.  Remember that you are responsible for knowing the meaning of all of the words on the list.  I have started adding the synonyms, but if you still do not understand what a word means, you need to use a dictionary to look it up.

We're moving along in The Giver

Today we continued reading and taking notes on The Giver.  I am typing up the notes to post here, but you must only use this as a resource for copying your notes into your reading journal in your own hand writing or highlighting information in your own copy of the book.

Yeah! You made it to the end! CRCTs are over, and now we can focus on our novels!

After the end of CRCT testing today, students went to fourth period for lunch and a 30 minute class.  We read more in The Giver and took notes.  If you were absent, make sure that you check with a reliable classmate to get the notes.  After changing to 3rd period, we had ice cream sundaes, then went to a presentation in the theater until time for bus dismissal.

Progress reports are being printed and will be sent home Friday.  We have a few weeks left before the end of the year, so let's refocus and keep our grades up.  We have some very interesting assignments coming up!

New Weights for the Categories on Pinnacle

You may notice that the weights for the categories on Pinnacle have changed somewhat to reflect more accurately the amount of time and emphasis we are giving this nine weeks to the different standards. Our primary unit of study for this nine weeks is Response to Literature.  The majority of our remaining time this school year will be spent reading novels and writing about them. Therefore, the Conventions category has changed from 35 percent of the total grade to 20 percent, and the Reading category had changed from 20 percent to 35 percent of the total grade.  The Writing category and the Listening, Speaking, and Viewing category remain unchanged.

After the CRCT testing this morning, we continued with reading and analyzing The Giver.  If you were absent, you need to confer with a classmate to update your notes and vocabulary lists.  If you do not have your own copy of the book, you may arrange to come to school early to catch up with the rest of the class on the reading.

Three Down; Two to Go! Make sure that you have some fun this weekend. You earned it!

Besides completing three of the five CRCT tests this week, all classes have begun reading The Giver.  We are using the reading journals to keep our notes as we analyze the characters, setting, etc.  If you have your own copy, remember to bring your book and highlighter to class each day. 

We are also identifying vocabulary words from the novel as we read and writing synonyms. Students are responsible for learning the meanings of the words on the lists.  If you feel that you do not understand a word after we have discussed it in class, make sure that you use a dictionary to look it up.

If you were absent, you will need to get with a classmate to make sure that you have all of the notes that you missed.
