Nearing the end....

Most classes have finished reading our second novel, Tuck Everlasting, and the last class is close behind.  

Those few students who STILL have not turned in their Black Square projects need to do so TOMORROW!  You need to bring me your brainstorming page, the completed square, and the grading rubric. 

Next week will be very busy, with yearbooks being distributed, International Day, Honors Assembly, school picnic, locker cleanout,  etc.  Let's get everything finished up and cleared away this week so that we can all enjoy our last week.

Hang in there! It's almost over!

Third Period: Black Square Projects are due tomorrow!

Today in class we continued reading Tuck Everlasting and comparing and contrasting the setting, characters, and theme with those of The Giver.

Don't forget to bring your money tomorrow for the Book Fair!  We will go to the Book Fair for the last 15 minutes of each period.  Many of the summer reading books will be available (see the school web page for Summer Reading lists).

3rd and 4th Periods: Make sure that you work on your Black Square Projects this weekend!

Fourth period projects are due MONDAY: Third period projects are due TUESDAY. Later each student will present his or her project to the class and explain the meaning of the images he or she chose to include.  Then we will hang the squares from the classroom ceiling with yarn.

All classes are now reading Tuck Everlasting.  We are comparing and contrasting the setting, characters, and themes to those of The Giver.  Tuck Everlasting is a beautifully written novel; share it with your parents!

Third period will begin the Black Square Projects tomorrow.

Third period finished reading The Giver in class today. They will begin the Black Square Project tomorrow.

Fifth and sixth periods received their assignment sheets and grading rubrics for the Black Square Project.  The finished project is worth 100 points.See yesteday's blog for the forms. They also began reading Tuck Everlasting in class today. Students are taking notes contrasting the setting and characters to those in The Giver, and the similar theme of "What makes life worth living?" 

Only thirteen more days!

Today 3rd and 4th periods continued reading The Giver.  Fourth period finished the book, and third period is close behind. BRING A WHITE COLORED PENCIL TO CLASS TOMORROW FOR THE PROJECT WE ARE STARTING.

Today 5th and 6th began their "Black Square" projects. These projects are DUE FRIDAY! You need to complete them at home and bring them to class ready to hang on Friday. BRING YOUR COPY OF TUCK EVERLASTING TO CLASS TOMORROW!

Wanted: White colored pencils

Fifth and Sixth Periods finished reading The Giver today. Third and Fourth are not far behind. Tomorrrow we will work on our projects for The Giver.  I will provide the 6x6 black squares and the yarn, but you will need a white colored pencil to illustrate Jonas's world. You may use materials of your choice to represent your world, AS LONG AS THE SQUARE CAN STILL BE HUNG FROM THE YARN WITHOUT TEARING.  The total project should represent the contrast between the world in The Giver and our world, especially from your perspective as a unique individual. We will hang the squares from the ceiling for the rest of the year. You won't believe how COOL it will look!

If you have your copy of Tuck Everlasting, begin bringing it to class as soon as your class finishes reading The Giver.  We will explore the common theme of "What makes life worth living?"

If you have a white colored pencil, bring it to class Monday.

Friday we took the vocabulary quiz over the first ten chapters of The Giver. Students also turned in their short essays. The grading rubric is on the blog from last Wednesday.

If you were absent on Friday, you need to make up the quiz and turn in your essay.  I will be at school early on Tuesday (around 8:15) for those who need to make up.
