French Culture and Food

We are learning how to identify common foods and beverages, along with French customs for shopping.  We are learning customs of Cote D'Ivoire as well as France.  Sentences to express need, want, accepting and refusing accompany our knowledge of foods.

Next Tuesday we will take a quiz on conjugations.  Thursday we will complete our studies of food with our Chapter 8 test.  We will continue to practice for our Oral Quiz which will take place the following week. A bientot!

French News

We had a wonderful time visiting a French cafe, Douceur de France, for an authentic French lunch last week.  It was my pleasure to accompany your very well-behaved students.  Many thanks to Ms. Odom and our chaperones.

This week, due to CRCT testing, we are spending most of our time learning the questions and answers for our upcoming Oral Quiz, which is a review of sentences we have learned this year.  Friday we will also have a quiz on expressions of quantities and meals. A bientot.

Douceur de France

We are looking forward to our luncheon tomorrow at a French cafe.  Our students have made their lunch selections from a French menu, and will have an opportunity to practice the French they have learned this year.

In Chapter 8 we continue to learn about foods, the partitive, and useful expressions in everyday life.  Our next conjugation quiz is scheduled for Monday, April 21. A bientot!

Douceur de France

We are anticipating our lunchtime visit to an authentic French cafe, Douceur de France, located near the Marietta Civic Center, on Wednesday, April 16, 2008.  Students need to submit their permission form, menu, and check for their lunch payable to Simpson Middle School, by Monday, March 31.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to experience French food in a French-speaking setting. They will be able to use some of the vocabulary we learned in our unit on the cafe.

As we begin Chapter 8, we will learn more food vocabulary.  We are also learning about more Francophone countries such as Cote d'Ivoire.

Douceur de France

We are looking forward to our Field Trip on Wednesday, April 16, to Douceur de France, an authentic French cafe/restaurant located on Glover Street, Marietta. We will eat lunch there from 11 a.m. to noon.  More information will come home shortly, including a permission slip and a menu with several lunch choices.  Your student may select a main course, such as quiche or sandwich, a drink if desired, and a dessert if desired.  All menu items must be paid in advance.

We will need some chaperones, so if you can join us, please let me know. A bientot!

Learning Games

In French we learn a great deal of our vocabulary and verbs by playing learning games like Concentration, the Windows game, Tic-tac-toe, Jeopardy, and Slap.  Games engage our students actively, so they enjoy learning.  This week we are playing several games to prepare for our Chapter 6 test on Friday, February 29.

Next week we will begin learning about the family.  We will learn new verbs and adjectives to describe our own families.  Again we will make use of many activities and learning games.  Towards the end of Chapter 7, we will complete a project on the family.

Last week we learned a new song, Savez-vous planter les choux? or Do you know how to plant cabbages? We are enjoying this popular French song as we continue to expand the repertoire of French songs that we can sing.

Bon Appetit!

Today we completed our chapter on cafe vocabulary and etiquette with our Chapter 5 Test.  We have learned how to order correctly, how to speak to the server politely, and which choices we are likely to find in a French cafe.  We also learned how to accept an invitation and how to politely decline.

We continue to practice our cafe dialogues in class.  Next week we will have our next oral quiz at Cafe Richman!  We also continue to add to our repertoire of French songs.  Ask your student to sing for you! A bientot!

We begin our third quarter by learning how to order simple menu items in a French cafe.  We are also reviewing gender and verb conjugations.  We will have our first conjugation quiz on Monday, January 14.  We have just begun to learn our new song, "Chantez," a sophisticated jazz tune that uses our knowledge of the seasons and the weather.

Conferences will begin on Tuesday, January 22.  I look forward to meeting the parents of our second period French class to discuss the progress of your wonderful children! A bientot!
